Major General William Jenkins Worth was second in command at the opening of the Mexican-American War in 1846. Worth was a tall and commanding figure said to be the best horseman and handsomest man in the Army. While leading his troops, Worth personally planted the first American flag on the Rio Grande, and was one of the first to enter the city of Puebla, Mexico, where he personally cut down the Mexican flag that waved over the National Palace. Worth later commanded the Department of Texas, and the city is named in his honor. |
